After hearing about the freezing temperatures in Europe, we decided to head to South America for the remainder of our journey. (Timing was very lucky given the turmoil in the Middle East.) We flew to Argentina so the kids could continue practicing their Spanish and we could all spend some time in nature. Given it is summer in Argentina (Dec-March), we knew some places would be booked. We were surprised at how easy it was to get an affordable apartment in BA…until we understood why. BA in the summer is similar to what it would be like living in a dog’s mouth. Hot and humid. It was 42 degrees celsius on a couple of the days we were there-I think that equates to 150 degrees fahrenheit or thereabouts. I have never before sweat while taking a shower. I can now see why EVERYONE leaves BA and heads to the mountains or the coast.
Anyway, we made the best of it and had a chance to do some amazing things. The Sunday street scene at Boca (where you could sit outside, have lunch and watch tango performances) was great. Also, our guided boat ride to Tigre (pictures below) where we swam in the warm river and ate a fantastic beef lomo lunch made the trip memorable. The Malba Museum was perfect for us-a great modern art museum that was right in the kid’s wheel house. Some of the best meat I have ever had (beef lomo and chorizo) at La Cabrera. Just a real pleasant introduction to Argentina with some of the nicest people we have met so far on our trip-except for the evil cab driver who “rigged” the meter when he saw a family of gringos get in. The $10 ride to downtown became a $25 dollar (105 pesos) ride and then he had the nerve to give us our $95 peso change in fake bills. Like an idiot, I offered to tip him and he refused to take it…. at that point, I should’ve known something was up! Other than that, no problems at all and we were excited to be in Argentina.
